Zoo Lange Erlen

Zoo Lange Erlen

The heart of the Lange Erlen is the animal park. One may always point out the age of the zoo: It was founded in 1871, three years before the big Zolli (and almost 60 years before Zurich Zoo). It was the year Chicago burned down, "Aida" was premiered and Henry Stanley met David Livingstone in Tanzania. And since then, our "Zolli" in the Long Alders has been a single lasting success that is unparalleled. Contributing to the success story are further developments, adaptations to new conditions or even a return to old values, both in the choice of animal species, animal husbandry and the level of flora. This is supported by the enormous recognition, if not love, of a broad population of our city, which is fortunately reflected in many large and small donations and legacies, which make it possible that the zoo can be visited and enjoyed free of charge by everyone. Next, we are already looking forward so much to the magnificent children's playground "Die Spielaue", that even the Three Kings of Basel and Greater Basel have contributed their large chunk during the last Advent season.
