Pius and Miriam with Gypsie and Mia (from 03.06.18):

After a wonderful night in the straw and an extensive breakfast on the Danuser organic farm we start our hike today at 09.00 am. The path leads us on an asphalt road across the Rhine and then all flat over fields and meadows to Domat/Ems, which is built around 7 hills. We pass through the village, cross under the tracks of the Rhaetian Railway and pass the two hills Tuma Tschelli and Tuma Casti. Unfortunately the Way of St. James is somewhat poorly signposted here. After leaving Domat/Ems, we walk past several allotment gardens and a little later we reach the Rhine power station, where we change again to the other side of the Rhine. From now on we are on the Senda Sursilvana, the hiking trail through the Surselva (Bündner Oberland), which will be part of our route again and again over the next few days. We follow a natural road up and down over meadows and through the forest until we reach Tamins after a short break. Under the castle rock the Vorder- and Hinterrhein flow together here. We stroll through the village on a tarred road, cross the main road, continue along a gravel path and a little later turn off into a very narrow path. It is only as wide as two feet and lined on both sides with tall grasses and bushes. This path is also a mountain bike trail. The mountain bikers come towards us partly in rapid speed and have to brake strongly in order not to run into us or our dogs. Therefore dogs should be led here on a leash, so that it does not come to collisions between biker and dog.

Alternating through forest and open terrain, always with beautiful views into the Vorder- and Hinterrheintal, we reach Trin-Digg about 5 km later. Here we take a break at the large village fountain with picnic table. From the edge of the village we have a fantastic view of the fruit tree covered slope to Trin village and the castle hill Canaschal and a wide view down the valley to Chur. Shortly after leaving Trin-Digg we cross the Val Pintrun, a side valley which leads steeply down to the Vorderrhein. This path offers again and again impressive views of the barren rock faces and down into the Rhine Gorge. Steadily upwards through the Flimserwald and over meadows we reach Conn. The cosy terrace of the excursion restaurant invites you to take a break and we drink something cool. Since the beginning of the afternoon the sun is burning down on us and it is partly unpleasantly hot.

In Conn it is definitely worth a detour to the viewing platform II Spir (Romanic for: the swift). It offers a sensational view down into the Ruinaulta, as the Rhine Gorge is called here. The ascent is via several stairs and should only be attempted by people and dogs who are free from giddiness.

After this impressive experience we continue walking and leave the Way of St. James after about 5 minutes. As wild camping is prohibited on the Flims/Laax/Falera municipal area, we will spend the night at the Flims campsite tonight. This is 1 hour away from the turnoff. After 45 minutes we pass Lake Cauma, which would also be worth a visit. This idyllic bathing lake is located in the middle of the Flims fir forest and fascinates with its intensive greenish to turquoise shimmering colours.

At 17.00 o'clock we finally reach the campsite, put up our tent and enjoy the rest of the evening.

We pay Fr. 11.00 per person, Fr. 10.00 for the tent and Fr. 0.80 for waste disposal. The first two dogs are free of charge, from the third dog on you pay Fr. 2.00.

Due to the humid temperatures we have 'only' covered a distance of about 18 km with about 1'000 meters of altitude today. Except in the villages this stage does not offer many drinking possibilities for the dogs. Therefore you should take enough water with you in any case.
